Local theaters provide comedies, drama, musicals

Shows such as “Music Man,” which was performed by local actors at the Firehouse 5 Playhouse, is one of the many productions presented at Livingston’s two community theaters.

There are two theaters in Livingston offering a variety of comedies, musicals and more serious dramatic offerings throughout the year.

Both are nonprofit community theaters.

The Blue Slipper Theatre is managed by a board of directors, and the Firehouse 5 Playhouse is managed by artistic director Russell Lewis and a board of directors.

The BLUE SLIPPER THEATRE, located at 113 E. Callender St., in Livingston's historic downtown district, is an all-volunteer organization that has offered quality community theater to area residents for more than 40 years.

The Blue Slipper typically produces four full-length productions each season, including a variety of comedic and dramatic selections.

The Blue Slipper summer offering will be “Honor” by Gillian Swanson, with a cast of four featuring Nate Robinson, Jennie Lynn Stanley, Sarah Swanson and Gillian Swanson. Through a series of intense confrontations, a wife, husband, lover and daughter negotiate the forces of passion, lust, history, responsibility and honor. The story, Greek in its examination of the fundamental human experience, is also utterly contemporary. A familiar story is told in a distinctly original way, using theatrical language that is darkly comic, highly poetic and uncompromisingly savage. “Honor”, by Joanna Murray Smith will open at the Blue Slipper Theatre on Friday June 6. Performances will be each Friday & Saturday in June, with Sunday matinees on June 8, 15 and 22. For more information call 222 7720.

FIREHOUSE 5 PLAYHOUSE, located just south of Livingston in the Sleeping Giant Trade Center on U.S. Highway 89, has provided quality live entertainment to the area for 16 years.  Crazy Mountain Productions produces four main stage musicals at the Firehouse 5 Playhouse each season.

These shows demonstrate community theater at its absolute finest. CMP also offers a wide variety of educational opportunities throughout the year.

This summer, July 25-Aug. 17, join the Firehouse 5 for family entertainment at its best with “The Foreigner,” directed by Gary Fish. The play, by Larry Shue, demonstrates what can happen when a group of devious characters must deal with a stranger, who, they think, knows no English.

Crazy Mountain Productions is holding its seventh annual Children’s Theatre Workshop June 9 through 21. This intense program explores a wide variety of theater skills with children ages 6 through 18 and culminates with three public performances of an original Firehouse musical.
