There is a new golf champion in Livingston. Winston Oppelt, 17, of Livingston, shot a 72 to win the overall championship after Monday’s Wheat Montana Junior Golf Tour 18-hole finale at Cottonwood Golf Club in Bozeman.

Oppelt took first place in the 16-17 boys’ age group and recorded the top score amongst boys aged 14 through 17. The three-time Park High varsity golf letter winner qualified for the Wheat Montana championship final after shooting a 78 on July 17 at Riverside Country Club in Bozeman.

Blake Finn of Big Timber took third-place overall with a 75, after falling in a two-man playoff to runner-up, Jack Thorsen (75).

Oppelt returns as one of three incoming seniors for the Rangers golf team, which will hold tryouts Aug. 10 and 11 at Livingston Golf Course.

The Rangers golf season opens with a tournament on Aug. 14 in Butte.
